The main activities of the department:

- conducting laboratory studies of samples  of regulated products / quarantine facilities in order to establish their quarantine phytosanitary condition;

  The main expertise in the field of plant quarantine:

  • entomological examination of samples of seed and planting material, food and technical products, stock products, cuts of flowers, forest products, sawn timber and wooden containers, as well as material selected during the survey activities of quarantine objects: pheromone, color traps, bribery, entomological document documents ( insects in various stages of development) to identify and identify quarantine pests.
  • Herbological examination of samples of seed material, grain and its products, soil, foodstuffs, as well as the material selected during the survey activities of quarantine objects: bills, sample documents (vegetative plants, weed seed samples) for the identification and identification of quarantine weeds .
  • Helminthological examination of samples of planting material, seed and food potatoes, roots and tubers, bulbs, rhizomes, as well as soil samples taken during the survey activities of quarantine objects, to identify and identify quarantine types of cyst-forming potato, gall, stem nematodes; timber products, sawn timber and wooden packaging made from softwood - to identify and identify pine stem nematodes in domestic and imported products.
  • bacteriological examination of samples of seed and planting material, foodstuffs, as well as material selected during the survey activities of quarantine facilities: seedlings, cuttings and parts of plants, seedlings of flowers and other agricultural crops, for the detection of quarantine pathogens. To identify and identify the causative agents of bacterial diseases in the department, such methods of analysis as various modifications of the PCR method (classical PCR with detection by electrophoresis, PCR in the FLASH format and Real Time) are used.
  • virological examination of samples of seed and planting material, foodstuffs, as well as the material selected during the survey activities of quarantine facilities: seedlings, cuttings and parts of plants, seedlings of flowers and other agricultural crops, for the detection of quarantine pathogens. To identify and identify the causative agents of viral diseases in the department, such methods of analysis as various modifications of the PCR method (classical RT-PCR with detection by the electrophoresis method, PCR in the FLASH format and Real Time) are used.
  • mycological examination of samples of seed and planting material, food and technical products, flower sections, pot plants for the detection of pathogens of fungal diseases by biological methods, as well as their identification by microscopic methods.

The work of the department is based on meeting the requirements for testing laboratories established by Russian and international standards. When conducting all types of research and measurements in the laboratory, only methods are used in accordance with GOST ISO / IEC 17025-2009, EPPO standards, which allows for high quality testing.

In order to ensure a high level of customer service and provide the most reliable information about samples, the quality management system is built on the basis of its continuous improvement, which includes expanding the scope of services provided, introducing new test methods, and continuing staff development in advanced laboratories and training centers in the country and abroad, participation in interlaboratory comparative trials, equipping with new modern equipment and laboratory modernization , and also constant intra laboratory control.

Basic research in the field of determining the varietal and sowing qualities of seeds and planting material:

For testing seed and planting material, the testing laboratory uses modern test methods and uses high-precision equipment.

 The main methods used by the Tula department of plant quarantine and seed quality to determine the sowing qualities of seeds:

- determination of purity and waste;

- determination of germination;

- determination of viability;

- determination of humidity;

- determination of the mass of 1000 seeds;

- determination of authenticity;

- determination of disease contamination;

- determination of the population of pest stocks;

- determination of the quality of tubers of seed potatoes;

- determination of varietal origin and purity by electrophoresis of storage proteins;

- determination of latent contamination of batches of seed potatoes with viral infections by PCR;

- Determination of the quality of onion sets and onion sampling;

- determination of germination of seeds of flower crops;

- determination of seed waste, evenness in size, single-seed, germination, single-growth and high quality, mass of 1000 seeds and mass of one sowing unit of sugar beet.

 The staff of the department includes 6 employees with higher education, qualifications, scientist agronomist. Experts are regularly trained in general and individual advanced training courses at the All-Russian Plant Quarantine Center in Moscow and Pyatigorsk, All-Russian Research Institute for Plant Protection  and others.
